“Science has been at the heart of my work in Brazil over four years. It was great on 10 June at my residence to witness signature of an agreement between CNPq, the Brazilian Research Council, and BBSRC, the UK Research Council on bio-science. The two signatories, Glaucius Oliva and Steve Visscher, have personally both done a huge amount to increase UK-Brazil collaboration and now we have the perspective of ever more joint research.

We also reflected at the event on the impact of the Science Without Borders programme in Brazil-UK science. Over the next year alone there will be 230 Brazilian PhD students in UK under the scheme and nearly 2000 undergraduates. These people will be catalyst for even stronger joint research in the future. International collaboration is the way forward for science. I’m delighted Brazil and the UK are becoming such key partners”.
